What it is

Hareline Mottled Tactical Tungsten Beads are slotted tungsten fly-tying beads with a matte finish and matte flake mottling. Tungsten gives you heavy weight up front, and the subdued mottled look keeps the bead from looking overly shiny on the hook.

What to tie with it

Use them for bead heads on nymphs and streamers, sliding the slotted bead onto the hook shank before you start your thread work. They’re built to help the fly ride down near the bottom and tick along structure, and they also make a clean, durable head on patterns that want a little extra drop.

Flies and the fish they're for

These beads fit classic bead-head nymphs like the Prince Nymph, Hare’s Ear, and Pheasant Tail for trout in rivers and tailwaters when fish are feeding subsurface and you need the fly to get down. They also work on bead-head streamers like the Woolly Bugger, Leech patterns, and a Bead Head Zonker for trout and smallmouth in streams and lakes, and for bigger fish when you’re swinging or stripping deeper banks and runs. In all of those, the tungsten bead is doing the job of getting the fly into the strike zone faster and staying there longer.

How it compares

Compared with Hareline Plummeting Tungsten Beads, the Tactical Mottled version leans toward a subdued mottled look rather than fluorescent or shiny options.
