What it is

Hareline Ovale Pure Silk Floss is a fly-tying floss made from 100% silk. It’s a single-strand, untwisted, flat thread that lays smooth on the hook, with a subtle natural sheen and a slight translucence that lets the body look alive instead of paint-flat. The dye is colorfast and the material is durable, so it holds up as a body wrap.

What to tie with it

Use it anywhere you want a slim, even body without corded ridges: flat body wraps on wets, classic body sections on traditional patterns, and clean tags at the rear of the fly. It’s also a good pick when you want a smooth, controlled build under a rib or over a tapered underbody. Because it’s flat and untwisted, you can control bulk by how tightly you lay each wrap.

Flies and the fish they're for

This is the kind of silk floss traditionally used for bodies and tags on trout wet flies, including spider-style and Clyde-style patterns, where you’re swinging or soft-hackling flies for trout in rivers and streams. It also fits right into fully dressed salmon flies, where floss bodies and tags are part of the classic build for Atlantic salmon in larger rivers. In both cases, the sheen and slight translucence are part of what gives those older patterns their “alive in the current” look.

How it compares

Compared to synthetic rayon flosses, silk brings a more natural sheen and a touch of translucence rather than an opaque, plastic-gloss look.
