What it is
Peacock Sword is a long peacock feather with firm, tapering barbs that throw a natural metallic green-blue shine when they catch the light. The barb size varies along the feather, so you can choose fine tips for smaller flies or wider sections when you need more presence. On the hook it gives a clean, defined silhouette with a lot of reflectivity.
What to tie with it
Use it whole or in matched slips for streamer wings and streamer tails, and for classic salmon and steelhead wing and tail work where you want a structured feather profile. It also makes a crisp nymph tail or an accent that adds shape without bulk. Most tyers tie it in as a flat wing/tail section rather than twisting it like herl.

Zug Bug Nymph uses peacock to add flash and attraction, and it’s commonly fished for trout in rivers and tailwaters. In the salmon and steelhead world, Peacock Sword shows up in traditional-style wings and tails on patterns like the Beauly Snowfly, The Dodger (Snowfly), and the Sir Charles, which are fished for Atlantic salmon and steelhead in flowing water. Tied as a whole-feather wing, it also crosses over into saltwater patterns where that reflective wing profile helps draw attention from predatory fish in coastal water.

Compared with peacock herl, peacock sword gives a different look and effect because it’s a longer, more structured feather with a distinct profile instead of a fuzzy, chenille-like body material. It’s a unique silhouette when you want peacock flash but not the herl texture.
