What it is
Hareline Plated Lead Eyes are lead dumbbell eyes with a copper-plated finish. They add weight for sink rate and a bright metal look that also kicks a little flash. Because they’re lead, they help set the balance and attitude of the fly in the water.
What to tie with it
Tie them in as the eyes on baitfish and shrimp-style patterns, right on top of the hook shank with figure-eight wraps and a hard thread dam, then lock them with head cement or resin if you like. They’re a straightforward way to add weight up front so the fly swims keel-down and tracks the way a lot of jiggy patterns are meant to.
Flies and the fish they're for
Even without a specific named pattern on the package, these are the same style of weighted eyes used on Clouser Minnows for smallmouth and largemouth in rivers and lakes, and for stripers in current. That dumbbell-eye format is also standard in many saltwater baitfish flies fished for redfish on flats and along shorelines. They’re also commonly used on shrimp and crab patterns where the extra weight helps get down to fish holding near the bottom, like redfish and bonefish.
How it compares
Compared with plain lead dumbbell eyes, the plated finish is less subdued. If you want a different metal look, gold-plated lead eyes are another flashy option, while plain lead dumbbell eyes stay more subtle.
