What it is
Hareline Polar Dub is a fine-textured synthetic dubbing with subtle flash mixed in, so it reads sparkly without looking loud. The fibers are long for its diameter, it wraps tightly on the thread, and you can pick it out after the wrap to get a buggy, fuzzy halo.
What to tie with it
Use it as tight dubbing for bodies and thoraxes on nymphs, scuds, and shrimp, then rough it up with a dubbing brush or Velcro to bring the fibers to life. It also works well as a small hotspot or egg-sack style accent, and those longer fibers make it useful when you want a slightly shaggy streamer body without going to a bulky brush. Some tyers also use small pinches as tails or short winging where a little glint helps.
Flies and the fish they're for
As a synthetic dubbing with a touch of flash that can be teased out, Polar Dub fits right into scud and sowbug patterns for trout in tailwaters and spring creeks where those bugs are a daily food source. It’s also a natural match for shrimp patterns for redfish and seatrout on shallow flats, and for trout where freshwater shrimp are present. In crustacean-style nymphs, that picked-out “buggy” look is a consistent trigger for trout feeding along the bottom in rivers.
How it compares
Compared with Hareline Ice Dub, Polar Dub is finer and wraps tighter, with longer fibers and a more subtle flash. Ice Dub is coarser, shorter-fibered, and flashier, and tends to shine more in chunkier dubbing applications.
