What it is
Hareline Quill Body is feather quill body material made from stripped, bleached feather quills that are dyed. The quill has natural segmentation that gives a clean, lifelike abdomen look, and it softens when soaked so it wraps smoothly on the hook. Once wrapped wet, it dries down to a durable finish.
What to tie with it
Use it for segmented bodies on dry flies, nymphs, and emergers by wrapping the quill like floss or tinsel, usually over a smooth underbody. Soaking it first (or wetting it at the bench) lets it lay flat and tight without fighting you. It’s a go-to material when you want that classic quill “ringed” abdomen without building segmentation with thread.
Flies and the fish they're for
Quill-body mayfly dries like the Quill Gordon and Red Quill are standard trout patterns on rivers and spring creeks when mayflies are hatching and the fish are looking for slender, segmented adults. A quill-body flying ant is a trout dry for late-summer terrestrials on freestones and tailwaters where fish key on ants in the film. These same quill bodies also translate cleanly to nymph and emerger versions for trout when they’re feeding subsurface during the hatch.
