What it is
Hareline Rabbit Hide is a crosscut rabbit hide strip cut into 1/8-inch wide pieces about 9–11 inches long. Because it’s crosscut against the grain, the fur naturally lays back as you wrap it, giving you a soft, full profile. In the water it stays flexible and pulses, and the dye is color-fast while the hide itself holds up well.
What to tie with it
Use it anywhere you want a moving strip of fur: zonker-style wings, leech bodies, and thick collars that breathe. The common bench moves are tying in a strip as a tail or underbody, then palmer-wrapping it up the shank for a full wrapped body, or wrapping a short section as a collar near the head. It’s easy to wrap and works in both freshwater and saltwater patterns.
Flies and the fish they're for
Cut and tied as a zonker strip, rabbit is at home in baitfish and leech-style streamers that get eaten by trout in rivers and stillwaters, and by smallmouth in moving water and lakes. As wrapped rabbit leeches, it’s a go-to look for trout and steelhead, especially when you’re swinging or stripping in current. In saltwater, the same rabbit-strip baitfish profile is commonly fished for species like striped bass and redfish where a soft, flowing body helps keep the fly swimming at slower strip speeds.
