What it is

Hareline Rabbit Hide Pieces Variety Pack is a mix of rabbit hide patches with the fur left on. Rabbit fur has excellent motion in the water and stays lively when wet, so it “breathes” and pulses instead of going stiff. At the bench it’s a cut-and-shape material: you trim it into strips, clumps, or scrap for dubbing.

What to tie with it

Use it to cut your own rabbit strips off the hide (a common width is about 1/4") for wrapping bodies or building full, moving collars. The scraps blend well into dubbing for dubbing bodies, and the longer fibers are handy for short tails and small wings. It also shines in dubbing loops when you want a shaggy, mobile profile without adding a lot of hard structure.

Flies and the fish they're for

Rabbit-on-the-hide is a staple for leech-style streamers and other rabbit-strip flies fished on the swing or with strips, where that breathing action sells the take. In freshwater that puts it squarely in play for pike and big trout in rivers and stillwaters, and it’s equally at home in larger predator streamers. It also gets used in saltwater baitfish and eel-style patterns where you want a wing or collar that keeps moving even on a slow retrieve, making it relevant for inshore species like striped bass and other coastal predators.

How it compares

Compared with Hareline Rabbit Fur Strips and Hareline Cut Rabbit Hide, this variety pack offers less consistency and less diversity in size and patch shape, since you’re working from assorted hide pieces rather than uniform strips or pre-cut sections. The tradeoff is that it’s set up for tyers who like cutting their own strips and using the leftovers for dubbing and loops.
