What it is

Hareline Ribbed Tungsten Bodies are pre-formed, ribbed bodies made from tungsten with molded-in eye sockets. They’re heavy for their size, so they sink a fly fast while giving you a realistic shrimp or scud silhouette. The ribbing builds segmentation without extra wraps, and they’re made to be easy to tie in on the hook.

What to tie with it

Use them as the main body on shrimp, scud, and Gammarus-style patterns, especially when you want the body shape and weight handled by one component. They shine in tightline/Czech nymphing style builds where you’re tying a slim, fast-dropping point fly. Tie them in as the body, then finish with your thorax, legs, antennae, and any shellback details around that built-in profile.

Flies and the fish they're for

These bodies are built for scud and shrimp profiles, so they slot naturally into Czech nymph-style scud/shrimp patterns that are fished as heavy point flies for trout in fast rivers and riffle-to-pool transitions where you need to get down quickly. In stillwaters, the same scud and Gammarus-style nymphs are staple trout flies when fish are keyed on freshwater crustaceans. Scaled down into small saltwater shrimp patterns, they’re a straightforward way to add weight and shape for species that eat shrimp in the shallows like redfish and bonefish.

How it compares

Compared with building weight with lead wire wraps, a ribbed tungsten body gives you a more consistent, realistic profile and is easier to tie in cleanly. Lead wraps can be less consistent and take more effort to shape into a smooth, even body.
