What it is
A ringneck pheasant neck patch is a piece of skin covered in male ringneck pheasant neck feathers. The feathers are webby with a natural range of sizes, so you can pull fibers for smaller details or use fuller sections when you want more movement.
What to tie with it
Use it for cheeks, wings, and tails, either by tying in small slips or by stripping and using the fibers. The webby fibers also work as soft hackle-style collars and legs on nymphs and small streamers. It’s a common bench material for salmon and steelhead patterns as well as everyday trout bugs.
Flies and the fish they're for
Pheasant neck fibers show up constantly in mayfly nymph patterns fished for trout and grayling in rivers and spring creeks, where that mottled, buggy look reads as legs and tailing. The same patch also gets picked through for salmon and steelhead flies as cheeks and winging in anadromous rivers, and for small streamer details when you’re chasing trout in moving water.
How it compares
This is often used as a substitute for Indian Crow-style feathers, with a similar role on classic salmon and steelhead dressings but at a lower cost and with easier availability.
