What it is
Hareline Scud Back is a semi-translucent, stretchy synthetic sheet material made for shell-style backs on small crustacean and nymph patterns. It stretches down tight over a dubbed body, stays durable after a lot of fish, and the semi-translucence lets the body show through instead of looking like an opaque strip.
What to tie with it
Use it for scud and sowbug backs by tying it in at the rear, building your body, then pulling it over the top and securing at the head. It also works cleanly as a wing case on nymphs, as a slim body material for midges and small nymph bodies, and as a trailing shuck when you want a tough, flexible tail end. On small crayfish patterns it makes an easy carapace over the thorax.

It’s a natural fit on scud and sowbug imitations, which are staple trout flies on tailwaters, spring creeks, and freestones anywhere fish key on freshwater crustaceans. As a wing-case material on nymphs and as a body on midge patterns, it stays relevant for trout in technical river runs and wintertime tailwater midge fishing, where durability matters when you’re cycling through a lot of fish. Used as a carapace on small crayfish patterns, it crosses over to warmwater too, where crayfish are a big part of what smallmouth and largemouth bass hunt in rivers and lakes.
