What it is
Hareline Senyo’s Shaggy Dub is a fly-tying dubbing made from micro spandex fibers. It’s textured and flexible, so it holds a shaggy profile on the hook and moves realistically in the water without cracking. It’s also durable and UV-resistant, which matters when a fly gets chewed up or spends time in sun and salt.
What to tie with it
Use it for nymph and streamer bodies when you want a buggy texture and some built-in motion. It works well spun in a dubbing loop for a fuller, spiky body, or applied as thread dubbing for slimmer profiles and smaller flies. Because it’s cut long, you can trim it tight for small nymphs or leave it long for bigger streamer bodies, and it also shows up on shrimp patterns and steelhead flies.
Flies and the fish they're for
Shaggy Dub gets used as the body material on Fly Fish Football-style patterns, which are typically fished for bass in freshwater lakes and ponds where a bulky, moving profile helps fish track the fly. In general, when you build shaggy, mobile streamer bodies with it, you’re in the zone for trout and smallmouth in rivers, and for saltwater species like redfish when you adapt that same buggy movement to shrimp-style profiles on the flats. It also fits steelhead fly bodies where durability and movement help in swinging or drifting presentations.
How it compares
Compared with traditional rubber materials used for similar effects, Shaggy Dub resists cracking and deterioration while staying flexible, so the profile and action hold up longer.
