What it is

Hareline Slinky Fibre is a crinkled synthetic tying fibre that stays a consistent diameter from butt to tip. It’s translucent, durable, and sheds water easily, so it doesn’t get heavy and it keeps its shape when you’re casting and fishing it.

What to tie with it

Use it for streamer tails and wings, or stack it up for large streamer bodies and bulky heads where you want volume without a lot of water grab. It also works well as dubbing brush material and for UV resin coated translucent bodies, especially on shrimp and crustacean patterns. Blending it with flash is a common move for baitfish profiles.

Flies and the fish they're for

Surf Candies tied with Slinky Fibre are a go-to for saltwater baitfish imitations for species like false albacore, Spanish mackerel, and striped bass, and they’re also right at home for coastal redfish when they’re keyed on small bait. Ultra Shrimp versions are fished for redfish, bonefish, and permit over flats and sandy potholes where shrimp are getting picked off. Kinky Muddler-style streamers get fished for trout and smallmouth in rivers and for striped bass in moving water when you want a bigger, pushy baitfish profile.

How it compares

Compared to bucktail, Slinky Fibre is more durable, more uniform in size, and more translucent, and it doesn’t have bucktail’s natural taper because it’s a level fibre. Steve Farrar’s SF Blend is essentially Slinky Fibre with fine flash already mixed in, so you get that flash-blended baitfish look without doing the blending at the bench.
