What it is

Hareline Squirrel Hair Dubbing is a squirrel hair dubbing blend made from squirrel underfur, some guard hairs, and synthetic fibers like antron. It has a spiky texture with a buggy look, a soft base that dubs easily, and a slight shimmer from the synthetic.

What to tie with it

Use it for dubbed insect bodies on wets, nymphs, and emergers, either on a thread-only dubbing noodle or in a dubbing loop when you want the guard hairs to really kick out. It also works well for Euro nymph hot spots when you want a little texture and just a touch of flash without going to a fully flashy dubbing.

Flies and the fish they're for

Squirrel shows up in classic wet-fly and streamer fishing through patterns like the Pickett Pin, a traditional wet fly commonly swung for trout in rivers and fished in lakes as a wet. Squirrel tail hair is also used in the Muddler Minnow as an underwing, a staple streamer for trout in moving water and stillwater, and it’s also fished for smallmouth in rivers. Beyond streamers and wets, squirrel tail hair is also a known wing material on larger dry flies, which puts it in play for trout when you’re fishing higher-floating, attractor-style dries.
