What it is
Hareline’s Stonefly Wing Cutter is a dedicated wing pad cutter for stonefly patterns. It has a precision cutting edge with durable construction and an ergonomic handle, so you can press out repeatable wing-pad shapes quickly at the bench.
What to tie with it
Use it to cut stonefly wing pads and wingcases from sheet materials and other natural tying materials you can punch cleanly. It’s a simple workflow: flatten your material, press the cutter through, then tie the pad in as a wingcase over the back and trim as needed for the size of nymph you’re building.
Flies and the fish they're for
This tool is aimed at realistic stonefly nymph patterns that imitate everything from big Salmonflies to smaller Winter Stones. Those flies are standard fare for trout in freestone rivers and tailwaters during stonefly activity, and the larger stonefly nymphs also get eaten by big browns and rainbows as a high-calorie meal. The same stonefly-style nymphs are also commonly fished for mountain whitefish alongside trout in the same rocky runs and seams.
