Flies and the fish they're for
Half hitches show up a lot on flies with bulky heads where you’re packing and spinning hair, like Muddler-style patterns, because you can snug and secure thread wraps without fighting the materials. Those Muddlers are commonly fished for trout in rivers and lakes, and they also cross over as baitfish/impression streamers for smallmouth bass in moving water. The same finishing approach is useful on heavily hackled flies where there’s not much room at the head, which covers plenty of trout dry flies and attractors on freestone streams and tailwaters.
