What it is
Hareline Strung Guinea Feathers are strung guinea feathers with a naturally spotted look and bold contrast. The fibers are webby, so they flare and pulse in the water instead of acting like stiff dry-fly hackle. On the hook they give you movement and a speckled profile that reads as buggy.
What to tie with it
They’re a go-to for wrapping soft, webby collars on streamers, wet flies, and salmon/steelhead patterns, either as a full collar or a sparse turn for just a hint of motion. You can also use the fibers for tails on nymphs, emergers, and wets by pulling a small bunch and tying it in like you would other soft feather fibers. Some tyers also use guinea as hackle tips for winged wet flies and even hackle-tip wings on classic dry flies and no-hackle dries when you want that spotted wing look.
Flies and the fish they're for
On the Tellico Nymph, guinea fibers are used to add a buggy tail look, a staple for trout in freestone streams and tailwaters. In bigger profiles like the Sculpzilla Streamer, guinea makes a lively, breathing collar that’s fished for predatory trout and smallmouth in rivers and around structure. Guinea also shows up in winged wet flies and salmon/steelhead flies where that webby collar and spotted silhouette help the fly swim and suggest legs or gills as it swings.
How it compares
No other feather really matches guinea’s combination of spotted appearance, shape, and webby traits, which is why it tends to stand on its own for that particular look and movement.
