What it is

Hareline Tapered Synthetic Quill is a tapered synthetic quill body wrap you wind on the hook like a strip. Because it’s dyed over clear, it keeps a translucent look in the finished body, and the taper gives you increasing segmentation spacing as you wrap forward. It’s easy to work with, takes UV resin well, and makes a durable body finish.

What to tie with it

Use it for segmented bodies on nymphs, emergers, dries, and wets, especially when you want a realistic, clearly segmented abdomen without fighting fragile natural materials. Tie it in at the tail, wrap it forward under steady tension, and you can lock it down with UV resin for extra durability. It’s also right at home on Euro nymph bodies where you want segmentation and a clean profile.

Flies and the fish they're for

Adult Sulfur patterns are a natural fit for this material because the segmented, translucent abdomen reads well on the water. Fish them for selective trout during mayfly hatches on rivers and tailwaters, where a clean adult profile matters. The same body style carries over to emerger versions for trout when fish are feeding just under the surface.

How it compares

Compared to turkey biots, this gives you a translucent, realistic segmented look with an easy wrap, while biots are natural, shorter, and more delicate even though they’re tough for their size. Compared to Hareline Synthetic Quill Body Wrap (non-tapered), the tapered version changes the segmentation spacing as you go, while the non-tapered wrap stays consistent; both are used for similar segmented bodies.
