What it is

Hareline Tungsten Fly Nuts are bead-style fly tying weights made from tungsten. The high density gives you a lot of weight in a small piece, so flies sink fast and stay down, and the material holds up well. They have a nut-shaped exterior with a bead-shaped interior, so you get a faceted look on the outside while they still sit and thread like a bead.

What to tie with it

Use them as the front weight on nymphs to get depth quickly and keep an underwater presentation where you want it. Tie them on like you would a bead: slide one onto the hook before you start, then build a thread dam or a small collar behind it to lock it in place and finish the body right up to the weight.

Flies and the fish they're for

These are primarily a nymphing weight, so they fit right into bead-headed nymph styles you’d fish for trout and panfish in rivers and streams, and for trout and bass in stillwaters when you need to get down. They also make sense on any subsurface pattern where adding depth quickly matters, like when you’re trying to keep a fly in the strike zone through faster current or deeper runs.
