What it is
Hareline Uni-French Oval Tinsel is an oval tinsel made from round tinsel, so it lays with a slightly raised profile when you wrap it. On the hook it creates a clean segmented look and it throws flash without adding much bulk.
What to tie with it
Use it for ribbing bodies to build segmentation and durability on nymphs, emergers, wet flies, and streamers. It also works well for neat butt sections and for ribbing steelhead flies, and it shows up in classic married wing salmon flies where a smooth, consistent tinsel wrap matters.
Flies and the fish they're for
On a Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear Nymph it’s the rib that reinforces the body and adds a subtle flash, a go-to for trout in rivers and stillwaters. On a Prince Nymph it ribs the body and helps the fly read as a buggy, segmented nymph for trout and also panfish in creeks and lakes. On a Muddler Minnow it can be used as a rib to add segmentation and flash for trout in rivers and for smallmouth in moving water. In classic patterns like the Silver Doctor, oval tinsel is part of the traditional dressed look for Atlantic salmon and other salmonids.
How it compares
Compared with Veevus French Tinsel, this one doesn’t include a copper option. Against other French oval tinsels, it’s used in the same way and is largely interchangeable at the vise.
