What it is
Uni-Mylar is a clear mylar tinsel you wrap on the hook as a smooth, glossy layer. It lays down shiny and slick, and it works well as a protective overlay because it’s a durable wrap.
What to tie with it
Use it to wrap bodies when you want a clean, glassy look, or to overwrap another body material to add shine and protect what’s underneath. It’s also handy as a final body overwrap on small flies where you’re trying to keep bulk down while still getting a tough finish.
Flies and the fish they're for
On Chironomids, Uni-Mylar is a common way to create that slick, natural-looking midge pupa body, a staple for trout and stillwater situations where midges dominate. On an Aero Dry Winged Midge or a Magic Midge, it gives you a shiny, durable body that holds up through multiple fish, making those patterns reliable for trout on rivers and tailwaters when fish are keyed on tiny adults and emergers.
How it compares
Compared to Opalescent Sulky tinsel and UTC Pearl Tinsel, Uni-Mylar stays clear rather than adding a colored hue. That makes it a better choice when you want shine and protection without shifting the look of the body underneath.
