What it is
UNI-Soft Wire is a fly tying wire you wrap around a hook or over other materials. It’s soft and flexible in the hand, so it lays down smoothly and resists snapping while you’re winding it. On the finished fly it holds up without tarnishing and adds durable, segmented structure.
What to tie with it
Use it for ribbing to segment bodies and to lock down fragile dubbing or herl so the fly lasts through more fish. You can also wrap it as a thorax or abdomen spiral, or build it into nymph bodies when you want extra weight and a tougher outer “cage” over the body. Because it’s easy to wrap, it’s a good choice when you’re doing tight, even turns for clean segmentation.
Flies and the fish they're for
Soft wire ribbing shows up on a lot of the nymphs and wet flies people fish everywhere: Hare’s Ear-style nymphs and Pheasant Tail-style nymphs for trout in rivers and tailwaters, and Copper John-style attractor nymphs for trout in faster freestone water where a little extra weight helps. The same rib-and-segment approach is also common on small nymphs and midges for trout in clear spring creeks and technical water, where durability matters because you’ll catch and release multiple fish on the same fly.
How it compares
Compared to more standard or traditional tying wires, this one is softer in the wrap and less prone to snapping, which makes it easier to handle when you’re trying to keep consistent tension on small hooks. It’s still durable on the fly and won’t tarnish over time.
