What it is
Hareline UV Chewee Skin is a UV fly-tying sheet material made from an elasticized sheet. It’s lightweight, durable, and very flexible, so it stretches and conforms over lumps in a dubbed body without getting brittle. In the water it keeps a clean silhouette and throws a bit of UV reflectivity without adding bulk.
What to tie with it
Use it for wing cases and shell backs by cutting a strip, tying it in, and pulling it forward over the top of the fly before securing and trimming. It also works well for wrapped bodies where you want a smooth, slightly translucent-looking cover that stays tight when you tension it on the wrap. Because it’s highly pliable, it’s handy anywhere you’d normally reach for a thin back material but want more stretch and toughness.
Flies and the fish they're for
On Caddis Larva patterns, Chewee Skin makes a durable shell back that holds up for trout and panfish in rivers and tailwaters where caddis are a staple. On Stonefly Nymphs it’s a clean, easy wing case or back that fits big, chunky nymph profiles fished for trout in freestones and tailwaters, and it also crosses over to smallmouth in rivers when you’re imitating larger nymphs. On Scuds it’s a straightforward shell-back/body wrap option for trout in spring creeks, tailwaters, and stillwaters where scuds are a year-round food source.
