Hareline UV2 Peacock Herl
$4.50 USD
What it is
Hareline UV2 Peacock Herl is strung peacock herl that’s been UV2-treated to add a UV-visible glow. It keeps the natural peacock iridescence and reflective flash, but shows up with extra pop under UV light and in certain water and light conditions.
What to tie with it
Wrap it as a body material on nymphs, or twist it into a rope with tying thread for a tougher herl body that won’t shred as easily while you’re building the fly. It also works well as a thorax hotspot, a collar, or as a small accent where you want that peacock look without needing a full, bulky wrap. On bigger hooks it’s a straightforward way to add shimmer to steelhead patterns and to put a little extra flash into streamer bodies.
Flies and the fish they're for
Peacock herl is a classic body and thorax material in bead-head nymph patterns that get fished for trout in rivers and tailwaters, and for panfish in ponds and slow water. In steelhead flies, herl bodies are commonly used for winter and spring fish in Great Lakes tributaries and Pacific Northwest rivers, where a bit of added visibility can help in colored flows. As a streamer accent, peacock herl is often used to suggest a baitfish shoulder or add a reflective trigger for trout and smallmouth in moving water.
How it compares
Compared with standard peacock herl, the UV2 treatment adds UV visibility while keeping the same basic peacock herl look and iridescence.
