What it is

Hareline UV2 Premium Selected Marabou is a set of selected natural marabou feathers in the 5–7 inch range. The tips are supple and the fibers breathe in the water, so it has that constant pulsing motion you want for leeches, baitfish, and anything “wormy.” It’s easy to wind on the hook, and it comes in UV-emitting options.

What to tie with it

Use it for tails on Wooly Buggers, swimmy tails on larger nymphs, and as wings or collars on streamers and steelhead flies. You can tie it in as a plume, pinch and tie it like a soft wing, or palmer-wrap it for a full-bodied, moving collar. It also works well as antennae on shrimp and crab patterns when you want a lot of motion without stiffness.

Flies and the fish they're for

On a Wooly Bugger, marabou is the tail that gives the fly its leechy pulse for trout in rivers and stillwaters, and it’s also a staple motion trigger for smallmouth in warmwater. In a Schminnow Fly, marabou helps sell that baitfish profile and movement for trout and other predators wherever you’re swinging or stripping small streamers. On Barr’s Damsel Nymph, marabou adds that living kick for trout in lakes and ponds where damsels are a key food source.

How it compares

Compared to rabbit fur/Zonker strip, marabou gives similar movement but typically in a shorter overall length and with an easier, lighter feather feel. Against arctic fox and EP Fibers, marabou stays more supple and natural at 5–7 inches, and it’s generally easier to palmer-wrap into collars than rabbit, arctic fox, or EP-style synthetics.
