What it is
Hareline UV2 Seal-X is a UV dubbing blend built to mimic seal, using a seal substitute mixed with UV2, Lite-Brite, and Ice Dub. At the bench it feels coarse and a little grabby in the fingers, and on the hook it shows a vibrant, sparkly shine with a UV reflective finish from the multi-material blend.
What to tie with it
Use it when you want a textured, buggy dubbed body or thorax that still throws light, especially on larger nymphs and bigger wet flies. It dubs well in a loop for more bulk and movement, or you can wax the thread and spin it straight on for a tighter body; either way the coarse fibers help it look alive. It also works for building shaggy collars and heads on streamers and leeches where you want a little extra flash without switching to a full synthetic brush.
Flies and the fish they're for
This is a natural fit for stonefly nymph patterns fished for trout in rivers, where that coarse texture helps suggest legs and gills and the shine shows up in deeper runs. On steelhead patterns, it makes a lively dubbed body or collar that carries flash and UV in moving water for anadromous fish. In leech and general streamer patterns it’s right at home for trout in rivers and stillwaters, and those same sparkly, UV-reflective qualities translate to saltwater patterns aimed at species like redfish and striped bass where a little glint helps the fly read as food.
How it compares
It’s designed as a seal substitute, giving you a similar buggy, coarse texture without using seal. Compared with SLF dubbing, it’s intended to have a similar look while leaning into a flashier, UV-finished blend.
