What it is
Hareline UV2 Seal X Ice Dubbing is a UV dubbing blend built on a seal substitute mixed with UV2 fibers plus Lite-Brite and Ice Dub. It has a coarse texture with a vibrant shine and a UV reflective finish, so it throws off sparkly flash rather than a flat, fuzzy look. On the hook it dubs chunky and lively, which reads well in moving water and on bigger profiles.
What to tie with it
Use it for dubbed bodies and thoraxes on nymphs and stoneflies, or build buggy collars and hot spots on steelhead, leech, and streamer patterns. It also works well in loops, brushes, and shaggy wraps when you want more movement and flash, and it’s at home in stillwater flies where that seal-style “breathing” look matters. Even though it’s coarse, you can still use it on dries, spinners, and emerger bodies when you want a brighter, flashier dubbed abdomen.
Flies and the fish they're for
This material shows up most naturally anywhere you’d normally reach for seal-style dubbing but want more shine and UV pop: stonefly nymphs for trout in freestone rivers, and leeches or other stillwater bugs for trout in lakes. It’s also a solid fit for steelhead patterns fished in Great Lakes tributaries and Pacific Northwest-style rivers, where a sparkly, UV-reactive body or collar helps in colored water. In saltwater patterns it’s used to add flash and a lively dubbed profile for species like redfish, seatrout, and striped bass on flats and in bays.
How it compares
It’s a seal dubbing substitute, but with added Lite-Brite and Ice Dub to push the sparkle and UV reflective finish. In overall role it’s similar to SLF-style dubbing, especially when you want a synthetic blend that gives you flash and a bit of bite in the texture.
