What it is
Hareline UV2 Select Bucktail is natural bucktail tail hair that’s been UV2 double-dyed for both UV fluorescence and UV reflectance. The fibers have a natural taper and a naturally flowing action in the water, with stiffness that varies depending on where you cut from the tail. That UV response is meant to add visibility underwater without changing the way bucktail fishes.
What to tie with it
Use it anywhere you’d normally reach for bucktail: streamer wings, hairwing salmon fly wings, and popper tails. It also works well for hollow-tied bodies when you want to build bulk without a lot of weight, and for Deceiver-style profiles when you’re blending bucktail into longer wing stacks. You can spin it into dubbing loops for heads or collars when you want a fuller front end with some added UV pop.
Flies and the fish they're for
Clouser Minnows tied with bucktail are staples for smallmouth and largemouth in rivers and lakes, and they’re equally at home for stripers and redfish in moving tidal water and the surf. Bendbacks built with bucktail wings are common for redfish and snook around grass and mangroves because they ride hook point up. Hollow Fleye and Beast Fleye patterns use hollow-tied bucktail to make big baitfish shapes for striped bass in rips and over beaches, and they’re also a standard approach for muskies and pike where you want a large profile that still casts. The Black Nose Dace Streamer is a classic bucktail baitfish that gets fished for trout in streams and for landlocked salmon where dace and minnows are on the menu.
How it compares
Compared with Hareline Large Northern Bucktails, it’s essentially the same natural hair and handling, but without the added UV2 dye visibility. Compared with Fish-Skull Faux Bucktail, this is real bucktail with a more natural look and flow, while the Faux Bucktail is a synthetic tapered fiber.
