Trico Male

The Trico Spinner Male is a small, delicate dry fly fishing fly designed to imitate the male Tricorythodes mayflies during spinner falls. Male Tricos are darker in color than females and play a critical role in summer hatches when trout feed selectively on spent-wing insects drifting in huge numbers. These fishing flies provide the perfect profile for matching the tiny, black-bodied males that blanket the water on calm mornings.

Design / Features

The Trico Spinner Male features a slim, dark body, upright spent wings, and fine hackle, allowing the fly to sit flush in the surface film. Its subtle, minimalist design captures the look of exhausted mayflies lying flat on the water. Because Tricos are among the smallest mayflies, this pattern is tied in very fine sizes—often size 22–26—to match the naturals and fool picky trout.

When and Where to Use

The Trico Spinner Male is essential during late summer mornings on spring creeks, tailwaters, and slow-moving rivers. Trout often pod up and feed steadily during spinner falls, refusing any fly that doesn’t match perfectly. Fished on ultrafine tippet with a dead-drift, this fly consistently brings results in some of the most challenging dry-fly situations.
