The Pupa is the third stage of the chironomid before it emerges into an adult. During metamorphosis, gas bubbles and gills form, bringing the pupae higher in the water column and into view of cruising trout. Fish one or two under a dry fly at your favorite lake and you’ll quickly understand why this is a pattern you'll want in every color and size in your alpine lake box.
