What Bobbin means
Most bobbins are a small frame with a tube at the front. The thread runs through the tube, which keeps it pointed at the hook and helps prevent fraying as you wrap.
Tension comes from the arms that grip the thread spool. Some bobbins are fixed-tension, others have a screw or collar to fine-tune drag for different thread sizes and materials. Ceramic-tube bobbins are common because the tube stays smooth and is less likely to cut thread.
In use, the bobbin hangs below the hook between wraps. You spin it to cord and flatten thread, park it out of the way while you tie in materials, then finish the fly with a whip finish or half hitches.
Why it matters on the water
Good tension control keeps thread from breaking. Too little tension leads to bulky heads and materials that spin on the shank.
A bobbin that feeds smoothly also speeds up learning. It makes it easier to keep consistent thread pressure, build neat tapers, and place thread exactly where you want it before starting the next step.

- DubbingDubbing is loose fiber used to build a fly’s body by twisting it onto tying thread or applying it in a loop. It ranges from natural fur to synthetic blends and comes in many textures and colors.
- HackleHackle is feather fiber used on a fly, either wrapped around the hook or tied in as a collar or wing. It adds movement, buoyancy, and the outline of legs.
- Hook sizeHook size is the numbering system that tells you how big a fishing hook is. For most trout hooks, bigger numbers mean smaller hooks, and hooks larger than size 1 use “aught” sizes (1/0, 2/0, 3/0).
- Whip finishA whip finish is the standard knot used to lock fly-tying thread at the end of a fly. It forms a small, neat knot at the head so the wraps do not unravel.
