What Carp means

Common carp, the best-known, are members of the minnow family (Cyprinidae). Anglers also run into grass carp and bighead or silver carp in some waters.

Most carp fishing with a fly is visual. You look for cruising fish, tailing fish, or carp that are “mudding” as they feed, then lead the fish with a small fly and let it eat. Patterns are usually nymphs, crayfish, or worm-style flies, fished on stout tippet because carp are strong and often live around rocks, brush, and riprap.

Why it matters on the water

Carp reward good approach and good shots. If you can judge speed and direction, put the fly a little ahead of the fish, and keep line off the fish’s back, you will get more eats than someone who just casts at the body.

They also teach line control and hook sets. A carp can move a long way fast after it eats, so managing slack and coming tight smoothly keeps you connected and keeps break-offs down.
