What Peacock bass means

Despite the name, peacock bass are not true bass. They are cichlids in the genus Cichla, native to the Amazon and Orinoco drainages and nearby waters.

They live in warm freshwater, often around wood, rock, weed edges, and current breaks. They are visual predators that hunt baitfish.

Fly fishing for peacocks is usually a streamer and popper game. You cast tight to cover, strip fast, and be ready for a violent eat.

Why it matters on the water

Peacock bass reward accurate casting more than long casting. Getting the fly as close to the target as possible matters, and speeding up the strip when a fish follows often makes it commit.

They hit hard and they hit near cover. That pushes tackle choices toward abrasion-resistant leader material, strong knots, and flies that track true when stripped fast, so you land more fish and lose fewer to wood and rocks.
