Destination Description
Alaska Steelhead Co is located near the town of Ninilchik, Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula. Ninilchik is known for its prime location between the big towns of Homer and Kenai. This prime location allows anglers to experience rivers that are far less crowded than other areas of the peninsula. Ninilchik has lots of Russian influence as evidenced by names of rivers such as the Koselof and several old Russian Orthodox historical sites. Ninilchik is also well known for multiple lookout points to experience the mountain ranges across the Cook Inlet. On clear sky days, guests will get breathtaking views of the four Volcanoes located directly across the Cook Inlet, Mt. Augustine, Mt. Iliamna, Mt. Redoubt, and Mt. Spurr.
Anglers will be pleased to know that steelhead opportunity is accessible to anglers of all skill levels with Alaska Steelhead Company. Steelheading usually has a negative stigma in the industry as being an “expert only” species, accompanied by limited opportunity and harsh conditions. Alaska is unique due to the abundance of healthy steelhead willing to eat flies through the season. This can be exciting for guests wanting to check the box on a difficult species, without having to hop on a multiple year waiting list for the chance to catch a single fish on more pressured rivers in the lower forty-eight and Canada. All of this adventure is based out of a truly luxurious 5-star lodge with high end service, a helicopter fishing program, and incredible cuisine.

FISHING
The primary species targeted, as the lodge name suggests, is steelhead! Steelhead enter the five different river systems ASC has to offer from the Cook Inlet, and anglers will oftentimes catch bright chrome steelhead with sea lice still attached to them every day. Depending on the river fished, techniques and equipment used can change day to day. Guests that fish the Kasilof, for example, may be able to use traditional longer spey rods swinging flies for steelhead, or on the smaller rivers, anglers can use single hand rods and switch rods. ASC also provides possibly the most exciting form of transportation to the river with their unique Helicopter Program. Two guests accompanied by a professional guide, and experienced helicopter pilot, have the chance to explore runs that the crowds simply cannot access. In addition to opportunities for steelhead, guests also enjoy consistent fishing for giant rainbow trout, silver salmon, and dolly varden.
ACCOMMODATIONS
You will be hard pressed to find finer accommodations anywhere in Alaska – much less at a fishing lodge! Giant fireplaces surrounding the main lodge ensure guests have a comfortable and inviting environment. It is VERY hard to have a bad experience at a lodge that is as well put together as ASC. The main lodge common areas are simply stunning - with numerous fireplaces, huge dining room, workout facility, and multiple indoor and outdoor patios.
Guests have shared stand alone cabins complete with a private patio, fireplace, and two Alaskan King Beds. Entertainment at the lodge can be had with good company in the fully furnished game room, complete with a ten seat poker table, jukebox with all of your favorite classic tunes, and a billiards table. On top of all the festivities to partake in, guests are blown away every day with fresh ingredients and made-from-scratch meals that are the cherry on top of what ASC does best. After enjoying a relaxing evening with great company while at the main lodge, guests will be excited to spend some quality pillow time in the cozy cabins ASC has on site. Simply put, the 5-Star service and dining will certainly put a smile on everyone’s face, and the fishing slowly becomes a bonus to a luxury vacation in Alaska!
TRAVEL
Anglers first travel to Anchorage, Alaska (ANC) for overnight prior to heading onward to Kenai the following day. Guests then fly onward to Kenai, Alaska from Anchorage with Ravn Air or Grant Aviation on a quick 25-minute flight. From Kenai Airport, a lodge representative will transport guests to the lodge, about a 50-minute van ride. Alaska Steelhead Company can provide fishing upon days of arrival if requested, and anglers should be prepared with fishing clothing and equipment ready to hit the water.
WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY
ALASKA STEELHEAD COMPANY IS OPEN EARLY SEPTEMBER – LATE OCTOBER
Steelhead season is short-lived in Alaska! The best time to catch a trophy steelhead in Alaska really is the entire time Alaska Steelhead Co. is in operation! There tends to be no bad week of fishing while in Alaska, and guests may experience great success and amazing weather earlier in the season and - moving through October - experience colder conditions with equally amazing fishing days.
NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
Fly fishing is the primary activity with ASC; however, guests may experience a relaxing day at the lodge immersed in a good book or a fantastic massage in their room! Guests that choose to sit out of fishing days can experience breathtaking scenery and enjoy the other lodge amenities. Guests can catch a ride into Homer, experience fisherman’s wharf, go to the “Salty Dog,” and feel like a true Alaskan crab fisherman! Surrounding the lodge are beautiful lookout points and multiple historical Russian Orthodox churches. Guests can request hitting golf balls over the bluff into the Cook Inlet, or shooting trap off the bluff behind the lodge! These things can be a great way to spend an early afternoon, and relax from fishing everyday.
