Punta Allen, Mexico is located approximately 56 kilometers south of Tulum. Guests travel 45 minutes to 1.5 hours from Cancun or Tulum's new airport in a comfortable van before hopping in boats for a water transfer to the beach in front of the lodge. Punta Allen is a quiet lobster fishing village south of the “Mayan Riviera” on a narrow peninsula at the northeastern point of the world famous Ascension Bay. The pavement ends in Tulum, and with it so does the hustle, crowds, and resort development in the hotel zone. This is the authentic, ecologically rich Yucatan Peninsula with dense tropical jungle and 1.3 million acres of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, a World Heritage Site, and genuine old Mayan Mexico. It is a safe little corner of the Yucatan that is remote enough to remain pristine, but easily reachable in a half day with direct flights to Cancun or Tulum from many U.S. portals including Dallas, Houston and Miami.
The Palometa Club is perhaps the most respected fishing lodge on the Yucatan and is universally known as having the best guide roster in the region. Their unique 2-guide per boat program provides a 1 on 1 guide : angler ratio. Ascension Bay is also arguably the world’s most consistent and reliable permit fishery as well as year-round and world class opportunity for bonefish, snook, tarpon, triggerfish, jack crevalle, barracuda, several species of reef fish and sharks. While the brand and reputation for success is geared around permit, guides don’t neglect the other species of Ascension Bay that make the fishery so diverse. Anglers of all skill levels are welcome here and should not be intimidated!
Opened in 2006, and recently completely renovated and updated, the lodge offers comfortable accommodations, a lively atmosphere, and incredible Mayan-Mexican cuisine. The Palometa Club is anything but a “fishing motel” – rather a laid back, comfortable, fun, old school fishing lodge in the purist form.

Bahia Ascension is known for offering one of the most species diverse saltwater fishing experiences available in the Caribbean. From shallow sandy flats to backcountry lagoons, it is a fishery that offers different styles of fishing for numerous species including bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, triggerfish, barracuda, jack crevalle, sharks and more.
Depending on the conditions and what species you are targeting, it may be possible to get out and wade skinny, hard, sandy flats for bones, pole and wade for permit, or lurk the lagoons and backcountry mangroves for tarpon and snook. The summer months also offer legit opportunities for larger migratory tarpon in the 60 - 140 pound range on the oceanside flats, and you never know when you will encounter barracudas, sharks, jacks, triggerfish, and more.

The Palometa Club was completely renovated in the summer of 2022 with an emphasis on guest creature comforts and functionality. New bathrooms and water system, updated fixtures and decor, new beds, updated bar, outdoor dining pergola, expanded pro / gift shop, increased internet bandwidth and a new generator are just a few of the highlights of the recent improvements.
The beachfront lodge is equipped with 24 hour electric power, wireless high speed internet, and super cool air conditioning. There are six bedrooms (3 upstairs and 3 downstairs) each with two full beds and private baths. There are several outdoor patios and a beautiful outdoor bar and covered dining area. The style and culture at the lodge is very refined and professional, but also very laid back and charming.
“Kaye’s Bar” stocks complimentary open bar margaritas, cold beer, traditional spirits and mixers. Meals offer delicious local Caribbean and Mexican/Mayan dishes with an emphasis on regional cuisine and of course loads of seafood… including the indigenous spiny lobster.
Although primarily a fishing destination, Palometa Club does offer alternative activities such as guided eco-tours, birding, snorkeling excursions, and tours of several of the twenty-two archeological sites of Mayan ruins and temples found in the region. The Sian Kaan and Ascension Bay is an excellent place for active outdoors lovers to escape civilization and relax in a tropical wilderness paradise! The lodge has an in-house massage therapist on staff to provide evening massages.
Non-anglers should also know that Punta Allen is a sleepy little working fishing village without the touristy focused amenities found in the resort towns of the Mayan Riviera. With a seven-boat rotation, there are often solo fishing opportunities for our guests that are sharing a room. Many of the most ardent permit anglers will opt for a few days fishing solo as oftentimes this can translate to twice the shots at fish.
Example: Book a standard shared room / boat package and each angler pays additional $400/day to have their own boat. In the event only ONE boat is fishing solo, the cost is $800 / per day.
$600 each way
Stays of less than a week or arrival/departure on days other than Friday will often incur an additional transportation charge of $600 each way for the private water and ground transfers required (shared with other guests, as applicable). We encourage short week guests to arrive or depart on Friday to minimize any additional transfer costs.

For those travelers with super early arrivals into Cancun, it can be tough to sit around the airport waiting for hours on the rest of the crew to arrive before loading up and heading south. Inversely, those travelers with late afternoon or early evening departures must often spend several hours at the airport before boarding to head home. The layover on the way home is usually the most arduous – especially given we must plan departure from the Club no earlier than 7:15am in order to take advantage of the water transfers all the way to the Ultima Maya.
Guests who have early arrivals or late departures are welcomed to take advantage of a proper half day of guided fishing to minimize downtime at the airport.
On arrival days, we can arrange your own private driver to provide transport to the Boca Paila Bridge (not the Ultima Maya), where guides will be waiting to take you out for a half day of afternoon fishing.
On departure days, guests can fish a proper half day in the morning to the Boca Paila bridge where a private driver will be waiting to get you to the airport on time for your afternoon / evening flight. The cost of an extra half day of fishing with a private transport is $1000 total for 1 or 2 anglers and $1,750 total for 3 or 4 anglers.
A fifty percent deposit is required at the time of booking in order to confirm all reservations. Final balance is due sixty days from departure. All deposits and/or final payments are non-refundable. Refunds or credits cannot be issued for fishing time lost due to inclement weather. Receipt of deposit and/or final payment is acknowledgment that registrant has read and accepts the cancellation, refund and responsibility clauses.

Guests first start the adventure by traveling to Cancun CUN) or Tulum (TQO), Mexico. Both airports are serviced by almost every major airline carrier, and are a direct flight from Dallas / Ft. Worth, Houston, Miami, and numerous other portals.
Once in Cancun or Tulum, guests are met by lodge representatives and transferred 45 minutes or 1.5 hours through Tulum and into the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve in a comfortable, air-conditioned van. Guests then hop into boats a few kilometers after entering the Sian Ka’an for a comfortable water transfer the remaining one hour to Punta Allen. The water transfer allows guests to avoid the entirety of the bumpy road to Punta Allen.
Guests must plan to arrive in Cancun on Friday no later than 1:30PM and schedule their return flight the following Friday no earlier than 12:30PM (Tulum) or 1:00PM (Cancun) in order to make comfortable connections to the lodge.
For the 2026 season, the Palometa Club is open January 16 – June 26 and July 10 - December 11, 2026. The Club is closed April 3-10, June 27 - July 9, September 18-October 2, and December 12 - January 22.
For the most part, guests should expect good fishing weather anytime the lodge is open and operating, with all standard species available and plentiful year round. The Yucatan enjoys warm and humid temperatures and comfortable fishing conditions; however there are certainly idiosyncrasies to consider with each of the seasons when planning your trip.
