Tarpon Town Anglers operates in one of the most unique and productive juvenile tarpon fisheries in the world, set along the remote mangrove coastline of the Bay of Campeche. This region encompasses more than 80 miles of untouched mangrove preserve, with a maze of lagoons, creeks, and backcountry channels that create ideal habitat for resident tarpon year-round.
Unlike migratory tarpon destinations, Campeche’s fishery is built around consistent populations of juvenile fish, typically ranging from 5 to 40 pounds, with average fish in the 10–12 pound class. These fish are present in large numbers throughout the system, offering anglers frequent visual encounters—often seeing dozens to hundreds of tarpon in a single day.
The experience is highly technical and immersive. Anglers spend their days targeting rolling fish in shallow, clear water, where success depends on quick reactions, accurate casts, and controlled retrieves. The diversity of water—from tight mangrove edges to expansive offshore grass flats—creates a dynamic fishery that rewards both precision and adaptability.
What sets Tarpon Town apart is not just the fishery, but the overall experience. The operation is locally owned and operated, with deep roots in the region and an intimate understanding of the water. The newly established lodge, opened in 2023, is located in the historic district of Campeche, a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its colonial architecture and relaxed coastal atmosphere.
Evenings are spent in town rather than in isolation, adding a cultural dimension to the trip. Guests can walk cobblestone streets, dine in local restaurants, and experience a part of Mexico that remains largely untouched by tourism.

Fishing with Tarpon Town Anglers is entirely boat-based, targeting juvenile tarpon in shallow mangrove systems and nearby offshore grass flats. Guides pole technical skiffs through lagoons, creeks, and open banks, positioning anglers for shots at rolling fish throughout the day.
This is a high-shot fishery—anglers may see dozens or even hundreds of tarpon daily—but success depends on quick, accurate casts ranging from 20 to 80 feet. Explosive eats and aerial fights are the norm.

After fifteen years of guests staying at a local hotel, Tarpon Town recently opened their own lodge right in the heart of Campeche. The family colonial home is located in the historic district, a block from the famous pedestrian 59th Street, and two blocks from the downtown plaza (Cathedral Square). The lodge features the most common modern amenities, while keeping the original architecture and decoration. There are three double rooms for up to six guests, with two full-size beds. Each room has its own private bathroom with hot and cold water, including a spacious tile shower with tempered glass doors.
Snacks, beverages, high-speed WiFi, and a 4K TV are in each room. Guests can also enjoy the two courtyards that have manicured gardens, pool, comfortable chairs situated on both patios, while enjoying an assortment of beer, wines, hard liquors, bottled water and soft drinks are supplied (if Included in your package). Lodge staff cook breakfast every morning at 5AM serving an assortment of eggs, sweet bread, proteins, along with juice, coffee and milk. After breakfast, guests will commute approximately five minutes to the boats by car. After fishing, guests return to the lodge for cocktails and snacks poolside. There are numerous restaurants in the general vicinity of the hotel district, and you may prefer to try a different dining establishment each evening.
Fishing is the predominant activity while a guest of Tarpon Town Anglers, however the beautiful city of Campeche is a fantastic town to explore. If you are a history buff, Campeche and the surrounding areas make for a really interesting and educational holiday when not fishing. The Tarpon Town team can assist in programming in non-fishing tours and adventures in town and the surrounding areas. Some of the more popular activities include visiting the local market and museums as well as local Mayan ruins. Campeche is a beautiful and safe colonial city to explore and is very popular with tourists and non-angling companions.

There are many ways to travel to Campeche. Most American anglers travel through Houston (IAH) with United Airlines in route to Merida (MID) or Ciudad del Carmen (CME), however we will help determine the best routing depending upon seasonality and flight availability. When all else fails, the Mexico City routing is very convenient and affordable. Tarpon Town Outfitters will provide ground transportation to/from all airports and Campeche. Transfer costs are included for guests arriving into Merida or Campeche.
Campeche is a year round fishery, however there are idiosyncrasies to consider with each season. The late Spring, Summer, and early Autumn provide the most stable weather; however winter months, while a little riskier with cold fronts, can offer most comfortable air temperatures and awesome opportunity on the turtle grass flats for schooling 20-40 pounders.
Campeche has a tropical climate, like the other three states in the Yucatan Peninsula, and is warm most of the year. Winter temperatures range from 60 to 70F. Late spring and summer months can be very hot! Daytime temps as high as 90-100F with a lot of humidity are the norm. The rainy season starts in early summer with the possibility of heavy showers during the evening, but are usually coupled with beautiful crystal clear mornings. Generally speaking, whenever the weather is good - so is the tarpon fishing!
