Hip pack

A hip pack is a waist-worn pack that carries fly-fishing gear at your beltline, usually with zippered compartments and attachment points for tools.

What Hip pack means
Worn around the waist, a hip pack keeps fly boxes, tippet, and small tools close without putting weight on your shoulders. Most have one main compartment plus smaller pockets for things like leaders, floatant, and a phone.
It can ride in front for access, then slide around to your side or back while walking. Many anglers pair it with a wading belt and use the outside webbing or tabs for nippers, forceps, and a net holster.
Why it matters on the water
A waist pack changes how you move. It stays out of the casting lane and doesn’t swing into your rod hand the way some shoulder bags can, which matters when you’re stepping over rocks, climbing banks, or bushwhacking to the next run.
It also changes how you organize. With limited space, it pushes a tighter kit—one or two fly boxes, a couple spools of tippet, and the tools you actually reach for—so gear is easier to find and less likely to end up wet in the bottom of a big bag.
