A reel case is a protective cover for a fly reel, used for storage and travel to prevent dings, abrasion, and grit from getting into the reel.

What Reel case means
Hard reels and soft reels both get damaged the same way: impacts, rubbing in a bag, and fine grit. A reel case is a padded or rigid cover that keeps a fly reel from getting knocked around and keeps the spool and frame from grinding against other gear.
Some cases are sized for a bare reel. Others fit a reel mounted on a rod, which is handy for day-to-day transport. Many close with a zipper, flap, or drawcord and live in a boat bag, sling pack, or duffel between trips.
Why it matters on the water
Reels don’t need babying, but they do hate sand and hard knocks. A case helps keep grit out of the drag and keeps the reel foot, handle, and spool edges from getting chewed up during travel.
It also keeps wet gear from contaminating other gear. After a day with rain, spray, or a dunk, separating the reel from fly boxes, leaders, and tools makes the whole kit easier to manage back at the truck or lodge.
