Aniak River Lodge

Aniak River Lodge

Freshwater Fly Fishing Travel

Aniak River Lodge is located just outside of the small, western Alaskan town of Aniak.  The lodge itself is a weatherport tent-based lodge on the banks of the Aniak River.  It is a no frills wilderness experience, but with all the amenities to make guests’ trip comfortable, enjoyable, and one to remember for a lifetime.  The Aniak River system is full of braids and tributaries, making each day’s fishing unique.  Fish from the jet boat, or hop out and wade.  Everyday is an exploration.

What makes Aniak so special is its remoteness - imagine having the river to yourself with no other boats running by, and no planes flying overhead...something very rare in Alaska these days. They also offer some of the best mouse fishing for rainbow trout in the world.  If you are looking for a unique Alaska experience with the opportunity to catch 11 different species, including King Salmon and the elusive shellfish, this is the spot for you.

FISHING

The Aniak River system and its tributaries have one of the highest diversity of species in Alaska, totaling eleven different species of fish: all five Pacific salmon species, rainbow trout, dolly varden, arctic char, northern pike, grayling, and sheefish. An anglers’ day starts as soon as they hop in the jet boats out front of the lodge. Guides operate jet boats to reach different sections of the river, braids, or tributaries, and guests fish from the boat or get out and wade fish.

Aniak River Lodge offers some of the best trout mousing in the entire world all season long, with June, July, and early August serving as the most productive for top water action. Mousing is Aniak River Lodge’s speciality and separates them from other fishing operations in Alaska.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Aniak River Lodge consists of 8 weather ports and a large dining hall with a sun porch. Each spacious weatherport is equipped with a private bathroom, including hot and cold running water, a flushing toilet, and propane heat to ensure a comfortable stay regardless of the weather conditions. Each port also has a private covered porch for taking in the sounds and sights of the river out front. The lodge also utilizes a separate, more basic, tent camp up the river as a lunch spot when fishing the upper sections of the Aniak.

There is no sacrifice in the meal program at Aniak River Lodge. Breakfasts include all the classics - bacon, eggs, toast, cereal, and hashbrowns. Lunch consists of fresh caught fish, hot soups, deluxe sandwiches, and other warm items prepared by the guides on the water. Dinners are prepared by the executive chef and combine various meats and seafood.

TRAVEL

Aniak River Lodge operates on a Friday – Friday schedule.

The first leg of the trip is accomplished by guests reaching Anchorage, Alaska, which is serviced by numerous commercial carriers. Guests typically fly to Anchorage on Thursday and overnight in town at a hotel, before continuing on to Aniak on Friday morning.

REGIONAL FLIGHT TO / FROM ANIAK & ANCHORAGE

On Friday morning, guests take a short flight (75 minutes) from Anchorage to Aniak. Upon arriving in Aniak, guests are met with Aniak River Lodge staff and transported to the “lodge in town” for a light lunch and orientation. After that, guests wader up and fish their way up to the tent lodge to begin their Alaska fly fishing adventure.

WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY

ANIAK RIVER LODGE IS OPEN JUNE – SEPTEMBER

Choosing a date to fish anywhere in Western Alaska depends upon which species of fish you would like to target. Fishing is excellent all season, but the conditions and species available vary from month to month and may impact when you decide to visit. All months are excellent for viewing wildlife, and anglers often find themselves sharing the river or stream with multiple grizzly bears doing a little fishing of their own. The annual salmon run plays a huge role in the productivity and style of fishing. Every summer millions of Pacific Salmon return to their home streams to spawn and die, contributing to this natural cycle of life that maintains the health and productivity of the fishery.
