Cinco Rios Lodge

Freshwater Fly Fishing Travel

Cinco Ríos Lodge is widely regarded as one of the most complete and diverse trout fishing programs in Chilean Patagonia. Located just outside the town of Coyhaique and set along the banks of the Río Simpson, the lodge serves as a central hub for accessing an extraordinary range of fisheries across the Aysén Region. The program is built around variety. Unlike destinations focused on a single river system, Cinco Ríos provides access to an expansive network of both private and public waters, including freestone rivers, spring creeks, and lakes. Anglers can fish well-known rivers such as the Simpson, Paloma, Mañihuales, and Aysén, as well as smaller, lightly pressured creeks and exclusive private waters rarely seen by other anglers. This diversity is enhanced by the lodge’s long-standing operation and experienced guide team, who continually explore and develop new water within their extensive access. The result is a program that evolves over time, offering returning guests fresh opportunities and ensuring consistently high-quality fishing.

The surrounding environment is quintessential Patagonia—glacial valleys, snow-capped peaks, lush forests, and open pampas—all within close proximity. This geographic diversity allows anglers to experience a wide range of landscapes and fishing styles in a single trip. Wild brown trout are the primary focus and are abundant throughout the system, with healthy populations supported by nutrient-rich waters and minimal pressure. Rainbow trout provide additional variety, and both species are known for aggressive feeding behavior, particularly during peak dry fly conditions. Cinco Ríos Lodge combines this exceptional fishing with a high level of comfort, hospitality, and cuisine, creating a well-rounded experience. For anglers seeking a “best of Patagonia” program—one that offers variety, quality, and access to both private and classic waters—Cinco Ríos stands out as one of the premier options in the region.

FISHING

Fishing at Cinco Ríos Lodge is defined by its diversity and adaptability, offering a carefully balanced mix of float trips, walk-and-wade fishing, and stillwater opportunities. Over the course of a typical week, anglers experience multiple fisheries and techniques, maximizing both variety and success. Float fishing is a key component, with guided trips on rivers such as the Río Simpson and Río Mañihuales conducted from comfortable rafts. These floats allow anglers to cover water efficiently while targeting productive runs, cutbanks, and structure.

Jet boats are used to access remote sections of larger rivers and lakes, including the Azul and Paloma systems, where anglers can fish lake inlets, channels, and shoreline structure. Walk-and-wade fishing rounds out the experience, particularly on smaller private creeks and spring-fed systems. These environments provide technical, intimate fishing and opportunities to target rising trout with dry flies.

Dry fly fishing is a hallmark of the program, with attractor patterns, terrestrials, and hatch-matching flies all playing a role throughout the season. Streamers and nymphs are also used when conditions call for it, ensuring versatility in approach. This combination of methods, water types, and species creates a dynamic experience where no two days are the same, appealing to anglers who value both exploration and technical fishing.

TRAVEL

Travel to Cinco Ríos Lodge is efficient and straightforward for a Patagonia destination. International travelers typically arrive in Santiago, Chile, before connecting to Balmaceda Airport (BBA), the primary gateway to the Aysén Region.

Upon arrival in Balmaceda, lodge staff provide a short transfer—approximately 25 minutes—to the lodge near Coyhaique.

This minimal transfer time is a significant advantage, allowing guests to settle in quickly and often begin fishing the same day depending on arrival timing. Compared to more remote lodges requiring lengthy drives or charter flights, Cinco Ríos offers an ideal balance of accessibility and immersion, making it a convenient yet still wild Patagonia experience.

WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY

The fishing season at Cinco Ríos Lodge runs from November through April, aligning with Patagonia’s spring, summer, and early fall months.

Early season (November–December) brings rising temperatures, active fish, and strong subsurface fishing, with improving dry fly opportunities as insect activity increases.

Mid-season (January–February) is prime time, offering the most consistent weather and excellent dry fly fishing. Terrestrial patterns such as hoppers become particularly effective, and trout are highly active.

Late season (March–April) provides cooler temperatures and fewer anglers, with fish feeding aggressively ahead of winter. Streamer fishing can become more productive during this period, especially for larger trout.

The diversity of available water ensures productive fishing throughout the entire season, regardless of conditions.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES

Cinco Ríos Lodge offers a variety of non-angling activities, making it a strong option for couples or mixed-interest groups. The lodge’s location near Coyhaique provides access to both cultural experiences and outdoor adventures. Guests can enjoy horseback riding, hiking, and wildlife viewing throughout the surrounding valleys and mountains. The region is home to a wide range of species, including condors, foxes, and guanacos.

Cultural excursions into Coyhaique offer opportunities to explore local markets, artisan shops, and Patagonian traditions. The lodge can also arrange scenic tours and excursions into nearby wilderness areas, allowing guests to experience the broader beauty of Chilean Patagonia beyond the fishing. For those seeking relaxation, the lodge itself provides a comfortable setting to unwind, enjoy the scenery, and take in the quiet atmosphere of the region.
