Destination Description
Estancia del Zorro is one of the most unique and immersive fly fishing destinations in Chilean Patagonia, offering anglers exclusive access to a vast private ranch spanning more than 15,000 acres near the Chile–Argentina border. Set within the arid pampas at the foothills of the Andes, the property delivers a striking contrast of landscapes—rolling grasslands, rugged canyons, and distant mountain peaks—creating an unforgettable backdrop for a highly personalized fishing experience.
At its core, Estancia del Zorro is both a working Chilean ranch and a world-class fly fishing operation. Guests experience authentic Patagonian culture alongside exceptional angling, with opportunities to witness daily ranch life, local traditions, and abundant wildlife, including the iconic Andean condor soaring overhead. The lodge is part of the broader Cinco RÃos program, sharing the same experienced guide team and commitment to service, but offering a distinctly different environment focused on solitude and private water.Â
The fishery is defined by exclusivity and variety. The estancia features a remarkable 15-mile private spring creek, along with two private rivers and access to additional nearby lakes and fisheries. These waters are home to healthy populations of wild brown trout, with fish reaching impressive sizes—often up to 10 pounds in the spring creek system.Â
Unlike many Patagonia programs that rely heavily on public rivers, Estancia del Zorro emphasizes intimate, lightly pressured water where anglers can stalk fish in technical environments. The experience is highly customizable, with guides tailoring each day to conditions and angler preferences, whether focusing on small creek fishing or exploring larger nearby rivers such as the RÃo Simpson.Â
What truly sets Estancia del Zorro apart is the combination of private access, cultural immersion, and diverse fishing options. It is a destination designed for anglers who value solitude, technical fishing, and the opportunity to experience Patagonia in its most authentic and unspoiled form.

FISHING
Fishing at Estancia del Zorro is centered around private, technical water and a highly personalized approach. The highlight of the program is the estancia’s 15-mile spring creek, where anglers walk and wade through intimate channels targeting large, selective brown trout. This is classic sight fishing—spotting fish in clear water, making precise presentations, and adjusting flies and tactics to match conditions. Dry flies play a major role, particularly attractors and terrestrials, but nymphing and streamer fishing are also utilized when needed.
In addition to the spring creek, anglers have access to two private rivers and a variety of nearby lakes and streams, creating a well-rounded and dynamic program. For those seeking larger water, float trips on rivers like the RÃo Simpson can be incorporated, adding another dimension to the experience. One of the most unique aspects of the program is its cross-border flexibility—anglers may fish in Chile one day and access nearby Argentine waters the next, expanding both variety and opportunity. The fishing is best suited for anglers who enjoy stalking fish, refining presentations, and engaging in technical scenarios. With minimal pressure and extensive private access, the experience is both rewarding and highly immersive.
ACCOMMODATIONS

TRAVEL
Travel to Estancia del Zorro is straightforward and efficient for a remote Patagonia destination. International travelers typically arrive in Santiago, Chile, before connecting to Balmaceda Airport (BBA), the primary gateway to the Aysén Region.
From Balmaceda, guests are transferred by vehicle to the lodge, with a drive of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours through scenic Patagonian landscapes. The lodge is located roughly 20–25 miles from Coyhaique, making it accessible while still offering a remote feel. Most itineraries are structured as 7-night, 6-day fishing programs, with transfers coordinated by the lodge to ensure smooth logistics.
The ease of access—combined with the exclusivity of private ranch waters—makes Estancia del Zorro an excellent option for anglers seeking both convenience and a truly off-the-grid experience.
WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY
The fishing season at Estancia del Zorro runs from November through April, aligning with Patagonia’s spring, summer, and early fall.
Early season (November–December) offers excellent conditions with active fish and strong subsurface fishing, as warming temperatures bring increased insect activity. Dry fly opportunities begin to build during this period.
Mid-season (January–February) is prime time, with the most stable weather and consistent dry fly fishing. Terrestrials and attractor patterns are particularly effective, and trout are highly active throughout the system.
Late season (March–April) brings cooler temperatures and fewer anglers, with fish feeding aggressively before winter. Streamer fishing can become more productive, especially for targeting larger trout in deeper water.
The combination of private spring creeks and diverse nearby fisheries ensures productive fishing throughout the entire season.
NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
Estancia del Zorro offers a rich non-angling experience rooted in traditional Patagonian culture and the natural beauty of the region. As a working ranch, the estancia provides guests with a unique opportunity to experience authentic rural life in Chile. Guests can enjoy horseback riding across the pampas, exploring the vast property and surrounding landscapes. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with frequent sightings of condors, foxes, and other native species.
The lodge’s setting also lends itself to hiking, photography, and simply taking in the expansive scenery. The combination of open plains and nearby mountains creates a dramatic and ever-changing backdrop. Cultural experiences are a highlight, from traditional meals to interactions with staff and insight into estancia operations. Whether relaxing at the lodge or exploring the ranch, non-angling guests will find the experience both immersive and memorable.
