La Posada de los Farios

Freshwater Fly Fishing Travel

La Posada de los Farios—translated as “The Inn of the Brown Trout”—is one of Chilean Patagonia’s most authentic and intimate fly fishing lodges. Located roughly two hours north of Coyhaique in the remote Rio Cisnes Valley, the lodge sits on a working cattle ranch in a secluded Andean setting, far from crowds yet still accessible without the need for charter flights.

Originally opened in the mid-1990s and operated by longtime Patagonia outfitter Rex Bryngelson and his wife Maike, the lodge has played a quiet but important role in the development of fly fishing in the region. With decades of guiding experience, the hosts have cultivated a program centered on personalized service, flexible itineraries, and access to lightly pressured water.

The fishery is built around the Rio Cisnes, one of Patagonia’s most diverse and productive trout rivers. Flowing through a range of environments—from open steppe to granite canyons and temperate rainforest—the river provides an exceptional variety of fishing scenarios. The lodge’s location allows anglers to begin fishing literally steps from the front door, with additional access to nearby rivers, spring creeks, lagoons, and lakes—all within a short drive.

Wild brown trout are the primary focus and are abundant throughout the system, often feeding aggressively on the surface. Rainbow trout and seasonal king salmon add diversity to the fishery, creating a well-rounded experience. The region is particularly known for its dry fly fishing, with large, surface-oriented trout providing consistent visual opportunities.

What truly defines La Posada is its sense of solitude and authenticity. With very limited angling pressure and a maximum of just a handful of guests each week, it is entirely possible to fish for days without encountering another angler. Combined with dramatic Andean scenery and a relaxed ranch atmosphere, the experience feels both timeless and deeply connected to the roots of Patagonian fly fishing.

FISHING

Fishing at La Posada de los Farios is defined by variety and flexibility, with a program tailored daily to conditions and angler preference. The Rio Cisnes serves as the backbone of the experience, offering exceptional float fishing opportunities directly from the lodge, as well as extensive walk-and-wade access.

A typical week includes a mix of float trips on the Cisnes or nearby Rio Manihuales, along with wading smaller tributaries, spring creeks, and exploring hidden lagoons. Float trips are conducted in comfortable inflatable rafts, allowing anglers to cover water efficiently while stopping to target productive runs and structure.

Dry fly fishing is a hallmark of the experience, with large attractor patterns like foam terrestrials producing consistent surface action. However, nymphing, dry-dropper rigs, and streamer fishing are all utilized depending on conditions and target water. Fish are healthy and plentiful, with average trout ranging from 17–22 inches and opportunities for significantly larger fish, particularly in lakes and slower sections of river. The diversity of water—from freestone rivers to stillwater lakes—ensures that each day offers something new. This adaptability, combined with experienced guides and minimal fishing pressure, creates a highly engaging and productive trout program.

WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY

The primary fishing season at La Posada de los Farios runs from December through April, aligning with Patagonia’s summer months and the most stable weather conditions.

Early season (December–January) brings warming temperatures and active fish, with strong dry fly opportunities as insect activity increases. Rivers are typically in excellent condition, and fishing can be consistent across a variety of water types.

Mid-season (February) is often considered prime time, with the most reliable weather and abundant surface feeding. This is when anglers can expect the best combination of numbers and size.

Late season (March–April) offers cooler temperatures and fewer anglers, with fish often becoming more aggressive as they feed heavily before winter. Streamer fishing can become more productive during this period, particularly for larger trout.

Overall, the season provides consistent fishing with a strong emphasis on dry fly presentations throughout.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES

La Posada de los Farios offers a wide range of non-angling activities, making it an excellent destination for couples and groups with varied interests. The surrounding region is rich in natural beauty and cultural experiences, providing plenty to explore beyond the fishing. Guests can enjoy horseback riding across the ranch, hiking through scenic valleys, or exploring nearby wilderness areas. River rafting and kayaking are also available for those looking for more active adventures. The nearby Queulat National Park offers exceptional opportunities for guided excursions, including hikes to hanging glaciers and waterfalls set within lush temperate rainforest. Cultural experiences are another highlight, with opportunities to visit neighboring farms and interact with local “campesinos,” gaining insight into traditional Patagonian life. Sharing mate tea with a local gaucho is often a memorable part of the experience. Wildlife viewing and photography are also excellent, with abundant birdlife and dramatic landscapes providing endless inspiration.
