Destination Description
Los Locos Fishing is a high-energy, adventure-driven fly fishing operation based in the remote Pacific waters of Magdalena Bay. Built from a grassroots expedition in 2016, the program has evolved into one of the most unique and dynamic fisheries in the world—rooted in exploration, local partnerships, and a deep connection to the region.Â
Magdalena Bay itself is a vast, protected lagoon system shielded from the Pacific by barrier islands, creating an incredibly diverse ecosystem of mangroves, beaches, offshore waters, and bait-rich channels. This diversity is the foundation of the fishery—allowing anglers to experience everything from technical inshore fishing to explosive offshore action within the same trip.Â
What truly defines Los Locos is its focus on sight-based, high-adrenaline fishing. The marquee experience is targeting striped marlin on the fly—often casting to free-swimming fish or feeding bait balls in open water. This is widely considered one of the most visual and exhilarating saltwater fly fishing opportunities anywhere in the world.Â
Inshore, anglers pursue roosterfish along beaches, as well as snook, snapper, and other species within mangrove-lined estuaries. The program is intentionally dynamic, with each day shaped by conditions, fish movement, and angler preference—ensuring a constantly evolving experience on the water.Â
The operation itself blends international fly fishing expertise with deeply rooted local knowledge. Each boat is staffed by both a professional guide and a local captain, creating a highly dialed system that maximizes opportunity and efficiency.Â
Accommodations are based in the laid-back fishing village of Puerto San Carlos, where guests stay in a beachfront boutique setting and experience authentic Baja culture alongside the fishing program. Evenings are social, relaxed, and often centered around fresh seafood, storytelling, and the shared energy of a full day on the water.Â
For anglers seeking something different—less polished, more raw, and entirely unforgettable—Los Locos offers a fly fishing experience defined by intensity, exploration, and moments that are hard to replicate anywhere else.

TRAVEL
Travel to Los Locos Fishing typically begins with flights into Loreto, La Paz, or San José del Cabo. From there, guests are transferred by vehicle to Puerto San Carlos.
Drive times range from approximately 2 to 5 hours depending on arrival airport.
Once on property, daily fishing logistics are seamless, with short runs to the launch and immediate access to the bay. While travel requires some planning, the payoff is access to an extremely remote and lightly pressured fishery.
WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY
Los Locos operates multiple seasonal programs based on species and conditions.
Early Season (May–August): Strong inshore fishing with roosterfish, snook, and mixed species; calmer conditions
Middle Season (September): Transitional period with mixed opportunities
Late Season (October–January): Peak striped marlin season, with bait balls and highly visual offshore fishing
The fishery is dynamic and heavily influenced by bait movement, making flexibility key. When conditions align, Magdalena Bay offers some of the most exciting fly fishing on earth.
NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
Los Locos is a fishing-first destination, best suited for anglers focused on time on the water. That said, the surrounding Magdalena Bay ecosystem offers unique natural experiences.
