Destination Description
PRG has been offering exceptional expedition-style trips to the Rio Pico region in combination with other PRG programs for over a dozen years. While Rio Pico has historically provided lodging with less luxury and comfort, PRG at Rio Pico now operates the new Tres Valles Lodge – a beautiful facility up to the higher standards of anglers familiar with Trevelin and the estancias up north. In addition to upscale accommodations, Tres Valles has also brought miles of private water including Las Pampas River, Arroyo Negro, and Lake Ness. Tres Valles can be combined with other PRG programs with a stay as short as three nights, but should definitely be considered a stand alone program accommodating anglers with tremendous diversity in waters fished for a week+.
There is not a paved road in the entire region and anglers often have to ford rivers and open several gates on the way to remote fishing locations. PRG’s professional guides, some of them that grew up fishing the region, are well equipped to fish in the isolated region and all have rugged 4×4 trucks, inflatable rafts with custom-designed fishing frames, and years of experience in negotiating the terrain.

FISHING
PRG’s Rio Pico fishing program combines quite possibly the best lake fishing in all of Patagonia with exciting spring creek and small stream fishing. Both rainbow and brown trout, averaging six pounds and exceeding twenty pounds, can be targeted on one of the area’s many productive lakes, and often times these “hogs” can be landed on large dry flies.
Unlike other locations such as Jurassic Lake, Rio Pico offers a diverse valley with more than a dozen productive lakes, each with its own distinct character. Guests could fish for an entire week never touching the same lake twice. What’s more, the area also offers not only trophy rainbows, but also brown trout and brook trout. No other stillwater destination offers the beauty, variety, or productivity of the Rio Pico. Guests may also choose daily between one of several wade fishing adventures for trout averaging sixteen to twenty inches. It is necessary to walk or hike to the best sections of area streams, but those willing to explore will encounter some of Argentina’s best-kept secrets.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Tres Valles Lodge offers guests first-class accommodations, excellent service, and fine meals in the Rio Pico Area. Tres Valles is a beautiful mountain lodge offering four spacious double suites, each with private baths and private deck overlooking the spectacular Desnudo Mountain.
The six-thousand square foot lodge is intimate but spacious and distributed on two levels with a living room on each level, library, full bar, two dining areas, mudroom, large outside deck, barbeque pit, and two large fireplaces. As remote and private as the lodge is, it still offers guests both fixed phone and wi-fi, a luxury that guests have never enjoyed in Rio Pico before. Tres Valles also offers a professional kitchen preparing delicious gourmet meals along with traditional asados and barbeques showcasing grass-fed estancia beef and lamb. Guillermina and Simon Madero take pride in all aspects of the estancia and lodge management, ensuring guests enjoy an amazing lodging and fishing experience while staying in Rio Pico.
TRAVEL
Guests travel to Buenos Aires via direct overnight flight from several U.S. cities including New York, Miami, Houston, and Dallas/Ft. Worth International airports — arriving into Buenos Aires the following morning.
Guests traveling straight through then gather their luggage, clear customs, and are met by a driver who transfers the group across town to the Domestic Airport (AEP) for the flight to Esquel (EQS) aboard Aerolineas Argentinas. Most travelers elect to spend the day and evening in Buenos Aires prior to departing for Patagonia the following morning. If you have the time, B.A.’s nightlife, restaurants, museums, culture, and shopping are well worth the effort. This is a great way to break up the two legs of the journey, do some sightseeing, and recharge your batteries.
Tailwaters uses a very reliable local travel agent and concierge who lends a hand with domestic airfare as well as customs assistance and chauffeur service that provides ground transfers, hotel reservations and local activities for all our clients in Buenos Aires. Upon arrival in Patagonia, all PRG groups are met by a representative from Patagonia River Guides and transferred approximately three hours to Tres Valles.
WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY
Tres Valles’ season is November 1 - mid May.
There really is no “best time” to go - just nuances with weather to consider. The fishing season officially opens in Argentine Patagonia on November 1st. November has a springtime feel to it with snow still on the mountains and the wildflowers blooming.
December should be considered a prime South American summer month for anglers, and oftentimes the rivers are in the best shape of the season.
Summer (January - mid March) is the most popular season for fishing and tourism in Patagonia. Kids are on vacation and tourists abound. The weather is the best this time of the year with the warmest temperatures.
Fall (March 15 - May) is the favorite of many anglers, and it is a great time to visit Patagonia. Summer tourist traffic drops off completely and anglers once again have a vast wilderness to themselves with autumn leaves changing and cooler temperatures.
NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
Patagonia River Guides has a great deal to offer in addition to world-class fly fishing. Non-fishing guests or those who simply want to take a day off from fishing can enjoy relaxing around the lodge or choose from a variety of guided activities including: walking, hiking, or biking in or around Patagonia’s national parks, horseback riding on one of the area estancias, bird watching with an ornithologist, massage and holistic healing activities with professional therapist, whitewater rafting or scenic float trips, area cultural tours, shopping for local arts, crafts and gifts, visits across the border to Chile, and on-site cooking classes. Non-fishers are just as important as the fishermen and a complete itinerary will be prepared with as few or as many activities as the non-fisher would like. Please contact us for a complete schedule and options for non-fishing programs.
