Freshwater Fly Fishing Travel
Royal Wolf Lodge is an Alaska institution, built in Katmai National Park and Preserve in 1994 under the helm of Chris and Linda Branham. Now under new ownership, Royal Wolf continues to deliver luxury fishing experiences with a specialty in hunting trophy rainbow trout. Their location in the Park puts them right in the middle of the action - completely surrounded by world famous trout streams, abundant wildlife, and pure Alaskan wilderness.
With a singular focus on trout comes a team of tenured and uniquely-skilled fishing guides, many of whom have spent years guiding at Royal Wolf and pioneering the techniques and fly patterns used to catch these legendary fish in their local waters. Also unique to their fishing program is a sustainable approach to fishing and landing trout - they exclusively use flies with minimal impact to the fish, and land their trophies without the use of a net.
After each day of flying out for an epic day of fishing, guests return home to the comfortable modern lodge decorated “Alaska-style” with special artifacts, photographs, and paintings. The wrap around deck offers spectacular views while enjoying an apres-fish cocktail and exchanging stories of the ones landed and the ones that got away. Guest cabins are strategically placed with views of the surrounding wilderness and include all the modern amenities. If you're serious about trout, Royal Wolf is for you!

FISHING
The fishing at Royal Wolf is widely regarded as some of the best wild rainbow trout fly fishing in the world, centered on the interior Alaska wilderness of Katmai National Park and Preserve. The lodge sits adjacent to the Nonvianuk River - a productive trout stream just steps from your cabin - while daily floatplane fly-outs give access to more than 20 premier trout waters, including rivers, creeks, and tributaries.
Guides tailor daily fishing destinations based on conditions and your interests. Whether you’re sight-casting to actively feeding fish in clear creeks or drifting long sections of larger rivers by raft or boat, there’s varied water to explore. Throughout the season, tactics evolve with insect hatches and salmon runs, keeping the experience dynamic and rewarding. Their early season dry fly fishing is spectacular - a unique complement to their highly productive late season bead and streamer fishing. A strict catch-and-release ethic with barbless hooks helps preserve these healthy fisheries.
ACCOMMODATIONS
Guests at Royal Wolf Lodge enjoy a classic Alaska main lodge with all the modern updates. The large picture windows and wrap-around deck offer unobstructed, spectacular views of Alaska wilderness and the wildlife that inhabits it. Cabins are comfortable, private, and ensure all the amenities and creature comforts are available - heat, running water (including hot water), a full bathroom with shower, and two beds.
The lodge provides a Finnish, wood stove sauna for fishermen looking to relax and unwind after a day of fishing. The dining program and quality of the meals at Royal Wolf is an experience in itself. The head chef and sous chef are highly qualified and have been known to receive standing ovations from delighted guests. Days begin with a bountiful buffet-style breakfast, followed by imaginative and filling lunches served picnic-style on the river. After fishing, you are greeted home with a cocktail hour and delicious hors d’oeuvres, followed by a three-course dinner satisfying the most discerning palate.
TRAVEL
Royal Wolf Lodge operates on a Friday - Friday schedule.
Guests first fly to Anchorage, Alaska, which is serviced daily by the major airlines. Most guests travel to Anchorage on Thursday and spend the night in Anchorage at one of our recommended hotels, continuing on to the lodge the next day.
ANCHORAGE TO KING SALMON
On Friday, guests board their second flight from Anchorage to King Salmon via Alaska Airlines (arriving at 5:17pm). This flight is approximately 1 1/2 hours (285 miles). Once guests arrive in King Salmon, guests will be picked up by Royal Wolf staff and shuttled to the float plane for the last, short flight to the lodge. Upon arrival at the lodge, guests will be met with appetizers and refreshments, then shown to their rooms to unpack and get oriented.
WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY
Royal Wolf Lodge is open from June through October.
Choosing a date to fish anywhere in Western Alaska depends on which species you would like to target. Fishing is excellent all season, but the conditions and species available vary from month to month and may impact when you decide to visit. All months are excellent for viewing wildlife, and anglers often find themselves sharing the river or stream with multiple grizzly bears doing a little fishing of their own.
The annual salmon run plays a huge role in the productivity and style of fishing. Every summer, millions of Pacific Salmon return to their home streams to spawn and die, contributing in this natural cycle of life that maintains the health and productivity of the fishery.
NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES
We encourage non-angling companions to visit the lodge as well. Perhaps the best way to see Alaska’s gorgeous wilderness, scenery, and wildlife is on a fly-out fishing trip. Guests at Royal Wolf can detour to enjoy glacier and volcano flight-seeing, bear and wildlife viewing, and eco-tourism activities.
