Destination Description

The Rock at Talarik is nestled on the banks of the Lower Talarik Creek on a privately-owned section of property, and within walking distance of the shores of Lake Iliamna.  The Lower T, as it is commonly referred, is world renowned for its unique fishery and unusually large, chrome rainbow trout.  You will be hard pressed to find a larger average rainbow with as much grit and guts as those found on Lower Talarik Creek anywhere in the state of Alaska.

As the only lodge on the Lower Talarik, guests at The Rock can access fishing waters normally out of reach for traditional fly-out lodges on one of the most competitive rivers in the Lake Iliamna drainage.  The setting is remote and wild, perfect for adventurous anglers in pursuit of a trophy.  The creek itself is a meandering meadow stream amidst sweeping tundra, with shallow gravel bottom runs with grassy cut banks and bluffs ideal for sight fishing.  Silver salmon also spawn in this creek, making it a prime late season walk-and-wade fishery.

FISHING

The “Lower T” is one of the most highly sought after and competitive rivers in the Bristol Bay watershed…and for good reason. The setting and the fish that move in and out of the creek are different than anywhere else in Alaska. This is a common spot for anglers to finally catch their trophy Alaska rainbow trout.

As the only lodge on the Lower T, guests at The Rock have the opportunity to explore miles of the creek typically out of reach by other programs flying in for just a day’s fishing. The creek cuts through sweeping tundra, and anglers often use the bluff edges to sight fish monster trout and game plan the most effective way to present flies to these special fish. Other species also move into the creek, including Arctic Char several species of Pacific Salmon, and Grayling, offering some variety to each fishing day.

ACCOMMODATIONS

The Rock is designed for the passionate angler who does not desire the frills of an established, all-inclusive lodge - instead, only the comforts of a hot meal and a nice place to get much needed rest in preparation for the next day’s fishing. Sitting atop a bluff overlooking the Lower T, guests return home after each fishing day to two single room cabins powered by generator, each with two bunk beds and Toyotomi heaters, and a front porch for morning coffee or afternoon cocktails. Anglers and guides will eat hot breakfasts and dinner together in the mess hall cabin, which doubles as a common area for group gatherings. Hot showers are also on the menu, as well as a newly-added sauna! And a nutritious lunch is packed each day for you to enjoy on the water.

Catering to 4 guests per week, the Rock is perfect for small groups wanting a true Alaska adventure in a remote setting on their own schedule. With access to a side-by-side and 4-wheeler, guests and anglers can start their outing early, taking in sunrise on the water at one of the most fabled rivers in Western Alaska. And with guides serving also as your hosts and chefs, your week will feel completely personal to your group’s needs.

TRAVEL

The following day, you will fly via Lake & Peninsula Airlines to Iliamna, Alaska where lodge staff will be waiting for you with a van. The lodge staff will load your luggage and gear into the van for a short car ride to the float plane. Guests will then be transported to the lodge via float plane. Upon arrival at The Rock, guests have time to unpack and get oriented before participating in the welcoming dinner.

WHEN TO GO / SEASONALITY

The Rock is open August through early October, with the primary focus being the pursuit of big rainbow trout.

All months are excellent for viewing wildlife, and anglers often find themselves sharing the creek and tundra with grizzly bears doing a little fishing of their own. The annual salmon run plays a huge role in the productivity and style of fishing. Every summer, millions of Pacific Salmon return to their home streams to spawn and die, contributing in the natural cycle of life that maintains the health and productivity of the fishery. The Rock’s season is specifically focused on the period of time from when the salmon enter the creek through the end of their life cycle.

NON-ANGLING ACTIVITIES

Although fishing is the predominant activity at The Rock, guests at The Rock can detour to enjoy some bird hunting activities, take a 4-wheeler ride through the tundra for wildlife viewing, or go on a hike.
