What it is
Hareline Arctic Fox Tail Hair is a patch of fox tail hair on the hide. The fibers are soft and flowing with high movement in the water, and they’re easy to cut off the patch and tie in cleanly. On the hook it collapses and breathes more than stiffer synthetics.
What to tie with it
Use it for streamer wings and collars, especially where you want a mobile shoulder that pulses on the strip or swing. It also works well for bonefish fly wings and bodies, and as a substitute for marabou when you want a softer, easier-to-handle fiber. With shorter clippings it can be used as dubbing or for nymph tails when you want a softer, natural hair look.
Flies and the fish they're for
The Silveynator Tube Fly is a classic steelhead and salmon-style tube pattern, and arctic fox makes a lively wing or collar that moves on the swing in rivers. In a Gotcha Shrimp, the fox hair can be used in the wing or body to add motion for bonefish on flats. On a Wooly Bugger it can replace marabou to build a softer, flowing tail or collar for trout, smallmouth, and other freshwater predators in rivers and stillwaters.
How it compares
Compared to Craft Fur, arctic fox is softer with more movement and less stiffness, but it’s also less durable. Many tyers also reach for it as a marabou replacement when they want a softer fiber that’s easier to work with at the bench.
