What it is
The Hareline Gamakatsu R18B is a barbless fly-tying hook built on a 2X strong wire with a retainer (R) bend. It has Gamakatsu’s Nano Smooth Coat, a low-friction finish that helps the point slide in fast for quick, smooth penetration and high holding power once a fish is on.
What to tie with it
This is a workhorse nymph and wet-fly hook for weight-forward patterns where you want strength without going up in shank length. Tie nymph bodies and thoraxes the normal way with dubbing and ribbing, and it’s equally at home under soft hackle collars and in emerger profiles where you want a barbless hook that stays put in the fish.

A classic match for this hook is the Pheasant Tail Nymph, which is a staple for trout in rivers and tailwaters, especially when fished as a dead-drift nymph. The 2X strong build and retainer bend make sense when you’re targeting bigger trout on smaller nymphs in tailrace fisheries, where hook strength and holding power matter once the fish turns sideways in current.

Compared to conventional hook bends, the retainer bend is designed to hold fish better. Versus the Gamakatsu R10B Retainer Hook, the R18B covers a different size range and adds the Nano Smooth Coat, which the R10B lacks.
