What it is
Hareline Pheasant Body Feathers are strung golden pheasant body feathers that have been dyed. They’re natural feather fibers with a soft, mobile feel, so they breathe when you pulse or swing the fly. On the hook they wrap and sweep back cleanly as a collar or hackle.
What to tie with it
Use them as collar hackles on wet flies and streamers, or as streamer cheeks for a little side profile and movement. They also work well as spey-style hackles when you want a longer, flowing hackle stroke on a dressed hook. At the bench you’ll mostly be tying them in by the tip and wrapping, or tying in matched slips for small wing/cheek accents.
Flies and the fish they're for
These feathers show up any time you’re building soft-hackle and spey-style wet flies for trout and steelhead on rivers, where that moving hackle does the work on the swing. They also fit right into terrestrial patterns like grasshoppers, crickets, and beetles when you want a simple feather wing over the top, which is a standard trout tactic on summer creeks and freestones. For streamers, using them as cheeks is a common way to add contrast and shape on baitfish patterns aimed at trout and smallmouth in moving water.
