What it is

Steve Farrar SF Blend UV is a synthetic blending fiber with UV reflectivity built in, mixed with fine mylar flash. The fibers come pre-tapered, stay light and lively in the water, and they don’t soak up much water, so the fly keeps its shape and sheds water on the cast. It has a natural-looking texture for a synthetic, and it holds up well after fish and teeth.

What to tie with it

Use it to build baitfish bodies and full streamer profiles by stacking and blending clumps, then trimming to shape. It’s also a good dubbing-loop or brush material when you want a longer-fiber body with movement and a bit of flash already mixed in. Because it’s pre-tapered, you can tie in sparse for slim silhouettes or bulk it up and still keep a clean taper.

Flies and the fish they're for

This is a go-to material for baitfish-style streamers and bigger predator flies, so it fits right into trout streamer fishing in rivers and stillwaters where you’re imitating small forage fish. Step it up in size and it’s at home in pike and musky streamers on lakes and rivers, where durability and a shape that holds matter. Tied as saltwater and bluewater baitfish profiles, it’s used for species like striped bass, bluefish, and other pelagic and coastal predators where you want a fly that moves but doesn’t collapse or foul easily.
